Beat the Back to School Blues: Five Fun Ideas for Family and Friend Time Outdoors

Author: Marie-Elena Schembri

With kids going back to school it reminds us that fall is just around the corner- it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the last days of summer. Here are five ways you can get outside to enjoy the long days and warm temps. You can easily do all of these activities with your family or friends after school/work or on weekends, no matter where you live.

  1. Plan a Park Picnic! Bonus points for snacking on healthy veggies and fruits!

Plan a picnic with healthy, refreshing foods and drinks at a local park or nature area. Spread out a blanket or even bring camp chairs and set up in a spot with a view! After your picnic, go for a walk, look for birds or other wildlife, or play on the playground.

  1. Scavenger Hunt!

Decide where you will scavenge- in your neighborhood, at a state or city park, or a wild area. Scavenging is so much fun, and there are a variety of things you can look for-- flowers, leaves, pine cones, rocks, feathers or anything else you can come up with. Make it a game and whoever finds the most wins-- and gets to choose the next item to search for! Just be mindful not to cause harm to the environment or ecosystems. It’s best to look for items that are already on the ground, and be mindful of any park/preserve rules about picking flowers and/or taking items home. If you are in a sensitive naturescape, you can do an eco-friendly scavenge, simply use a smartphone to snap a picture or write down your finds on paper rather than physically gathering the items.

3. Ring in the end of Summer with a Garden Harvest Party

Get your favorite people together to harvest the garden, then make a meal together from your fresh vegetables and herbs. If you don’t have a garden at home, plan a trip to a farmer’s market instead. Make a playlist of harvest-themed or summer-themed songs and play music while you prepare and eat your meal. Eat your meal on the patio or by the garden if you can! For even more fun, consider making citrus and herb infused water (we recommend lemon and basil) and a fresh fruit salad for dessert- go big with your garden theme!

4. Find a Local Swimming Hole

If you don’t already have a favorite swimming hole, search online for lakes, rivers, and beaches near you. Plan an afternoon or even a whole day for swimming and soaking up the sunshine. If you go to a new place, take some time to explore and hike around the area. This is a great one to share with a favorite pup who has had to stay indoors during the hot August days.

5. Indulge Your Senses in a Moonlit Walk

There’s nothing better than a summer night spent with loved ones(or try it solo and spend some time with yourself). We recommend taking a moonlit walk just after sunset, when temps are starting to drop and fireflies are blinking brightly. See what looks, feels, and sounds different at night. Do you hear any animals or insects you don’t during the daytime (think OWLS, BATS, and CRICKETS), or notice different smells and sights. Just make sure to be safe, especially if in a neighborhood or park with vehicle traffic. You can wear bright clothes, headlamps and bring flashlights for extra visibility.
